The Causes of a Cracked Tooth

Posted .

When you notice a cracked tooth when you’re getting ready in the morning or brushing your teeth at night, you probably ask yourself how that happened. You might not remember the cause or you might remember it clearly. Either way, it’s best to contact your dentist, Dr. Josh Gosnell, so the crack doesn’t get worse. Unfortunately, there are many things that can cause a cracked tooth, like:

-Chewing something hard: This could be anything like an ice cube, a piece of hard candy, or a bone. It could also happen when you are using your teeth as tools, like when opening a package or tearing off a tag.

-A hard hit: This could be when you’re playing high-contact sports and you suffer a blow to the mouth without wearing a quality mouthguard. It could also be when you crash your bike and hit your mouth on the ground or when you trip and fall and hit your mouth on a hard table or wall.

-Bruxism: This is another name for the teeth grinding habit. Usually, people grind their teeth when they sleep. The habit applies pressure to the teeth, wears down the enamel, and breaks the surface. If this is the cause for you, it’s best to wear a mouthguard while you sleep to prevent further damage.
